Pray Before You Decide

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” —James 1:5 (KJV)

REFLECTION

Every day we make decisions.

Some are small and seemingly insignificant. Others carry consequences that may shape our lives, our relationships, our families, and our futures.

And too often, we make those decisions before we pray.

We consider our options. We weigh the advantages and disadvantages. We seek advice, examine the circumstances, and determine what seems reasonable.

Then, having decided what we want to do, we ask God to bless our decision.

But what if prayer came first?

James reminds us that when we lack wisdom, we have an extraordinary invitation: Ask God.

Notice that James does not tell us to ask God only when we have exhausted every other possibility. He invites us to seek divine wisdom because God is willing to give it.

There is a difference between asking God to approve our plans and inviting Him to direct our steps.

One seeks confirmation. The other seeks guidance.

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts, rather than leaning upon our own understanding. When we acknowledge Him in all our ways, He promises to direct our paths.

Prayer does not eliminate the need to think carefully, seek wise counsel, or accept responsibility for our choices. Rather, it brings those activities under the influence of our relationship with God.

Sometimes God's guidance comes through Scripture. Sometimes through wise counsel. Sometimes through circumstances that cause us to reconsider. And sometimes we must move forward in faith without knowing every detail of what lies ahead.

But the essential question remains:

Have I invited God into this decision before making it?

A life of prayer is not simply a life in which we pray when trouble comes.

It is a life in which we increasingly refuse to move ahead without acknowledging God's presence and seeking His wisdom.

Prayer becomes our first response, not our last resort.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have moved ahead without seeking Your wisdom. Teach me to acknowledge You in every area of my life. Give me discernment to recognize Your guidance, humility to surrender my preferences, and courage to follow wherever You lead. May my decisions reflect not merely what I desire, but what You know is best. In Jesus' name, amen.

Am I seeking God's direction, or merely asking Him to bless what I have already decided?
