Pray for Someone Who Cannot Pray for Himself
“When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.”— Mark 2:5 (KJV)
REFLECTION
There are moments when people cannot carry themselves to Jesus.
Sometimes the burden is too heavy. Sometimes suffering has exhausted their strength. Sometimes discouragement has silenced their prayers. And sometimes they have simply lost the will to believe that anything can change.
In Mark 2, we encounter a man who could not get to Jesus on his own. But he had four friends who refused to leave him where he was.
They carried him.
When the crowd blocked their way, they found another. When the door was inaccessible, they went to the roof. Their determination was not merely to get their friend into a building. They wanted to bring him into the presence of Jesus.
And then Scripture records something remarkable:
“When Jesus saw their faith…”
Not merely the faith of the man lying on the bed, but the faith demonstrated by those who carried him.
What a beautiful picture of intercessory prayer!
There are people in our lives who are spiritually paralyzed by disappointment, overwhelmed by grief, weakened by illness, or trapped in circumstances they cannot overcome.
They may not know how to pray. They may not have the strength to pray. They may not even believe that prayer will make a difference.
But we can carry them to Jesus.
Intercession is more than mentioning someone's name in prayer. It is choosing to stand before God on behalf of another person. It is refusing to allow someone's weakness to become the end of their story.
The four friends could not heal the man. That was Christ's work. But they could bring him to the One who could.
And that is our privilege as intercessors.
We cannot do for others what only God can do. But we can bring others before the God who can.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, open my eyes to those around me who are struggling beneath burdens they cannot carry alone. Give me the compassion to notice, the faith to intercede, and the perseverance to continue praying when answers are delayed. Teach me to carry others into Your presence, trusting You to accomplish what I cannot. In Jesus' name, amen.
