Until Something Happens

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” — Luke 11:9 (KJV)

REFLECTION

There comes a time in prayer when we must decide whether we will continue or give up.

We have asked, but the answer has not come.

We have sought, but the way remains unclear.

We have knocked, but the door appears to remain closed.

What do we do when nothing seems to be happening?

Jesus tells the story of a man who went to his friend's house at midnight asking for bread. He had an unexpected visitor and nothing to offer him. Although his friend initially refused to get up, the man persisted until he received what he needed.

Jesus followed that story with an invitation: Ask. Seek. Knock.

These are not merely instructions to pray once and move on. They are an invitation to persistent faith.

But persistence is not an attempt to overcome God's reluctance. We do not pray to persuade an unwilling Father to care about us.

We persist because we trust the One to whom we pray.

And by now, we have discovered something important.

Sometimes prayer changes our circumstances.

Sometimes prayer changes our understanding.

Sometimes prayer changes our hearts.

And sometimes, while we are praying, God is working in ways we cannot see.

The answer may come differently than we expected. The timing may not be ours. And sometimes God's answer may be no.

But unanswered requests do not mean that our prayers have been unheard.

Persistent prayer is more than refusing to surrender a request. It is refusing to surrender our relationship with God.

We continue asking because He is our Father.

We continue seeking because He is worthy of our trust.

We continue knocking because we believe He hears us.

And even when the answer is delayed, communion with Him is never wasted.

The greatest thing that happens when we persist in prayer may be what God accomplishes within us while we wait for Him to work around us.

The storm may have passed, but the puddles remain. Yet the sun is shining, new life is emerging, and God is still at work. Something is happening.

So keep praying. Not because God must give you everything you ask. But because you have learned that whatever happens, you cannot afford to let go of Him.

PRAYER

Father, teach me to persist in prayer without trying to control Your answers. Give me faith to keep asking, courage to keep seeking, and patience to keep knocking. When the answer is delayed, deepen my trust. When Your answer is different from what I desire, help me receive it with grace. Above all, keep me close to You. Amen.

JOURNAL PROMPT

What prayer have you been carrying before God without receiving the answer you hoped for? As you reflect on this experience, what might God be teaching you about trust, surrender, and perseverance? How can you continue praying faithfully while leaving the outcome in His hands?

I especially like this prompt because it moves the reader from “Why hasn't God answered?” to “What is God doing in me while I continue to pray?”
