When Prayer Enters the Battle
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” — Ephesians 6:12
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” — Ephesians 6:18
REFLECTION
Not every battle in life can be seen.
Some battles are fought in the mind. Others are experienced in our homes, our relationships, our churches, and our communities. We encounter discouragement, temptation, division, fear, and spiritual opposition.
But Paul reminds us that our struggle is not merely against flesh and blood.
There are spiritual realities at work beyond what our natural eyes can see.
In Ephesians 6, Paul describes the armor of God. He speaks of truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. Then he calls believers to pray always, with perseverance.
Notice something important: Prayer is not an afterthought to the armor of God. Prayer is essential to the believer's participation in the spiritual battle.
We cannot overcome spiritual opposition through human strength, cleverness, determination, or good intentions alone.
We need the power of God.
And prayer brings us into conscious dependence upon that power.
When we pray, we are not attempting to persuade God to become involved in a battle He has overlooked. We are aligning ourselves with the One who has already secured the victory through Jesus Christ.
Prayer does not make us the commander of the battle. Christ is the Commander.
Our responsibility is to stand in faith, put on the whole armor of God, and remain steadfast in prayer.
Sometimes we may not see immediate evidence that anything is changing. The struggle may continue. The opposition may remain. The circumstances may appear unchanged.
But the absence of visible results does not mean God is inactive.
Faith does not require us to see the battle. Faith requires us to trust the Commander.
Today, whatever battle you may be facing, remember that you are not called to fight in your own strength.
You are called to stand in Christ, trust His power, and pray.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, open my eyes to recognize that the struggles I face are not always what they appear to be. Forgive me for relying upon my own strength when You have invited me to depend upon Yours. Clothe me with Your armor. Strengthen my faith, guard my mind, and teach me to pray with perseverance. Help me remember that the victory belongs to Jesus Christ. May I stand faithfully in Him. In Jesus' name, amen.
