When the Answer Is No.
“For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:8–9 (KJV)
REFLECTION
Paul prayed for something very specific. He wanted the thorn removed.
Not once. Not twice. Three times he asked God to take it away.
Paul believed in persistent prayer. But persistent prayer does not mean that God will eventually give us the answer we want if we simply ask long enough. Sometimes persistence brings us to the place where we can hear an answer we did not want to hear.
God said no to Paul's request—but He did not leave Paul without an answer.
“My grace is sufficient for thee.”
The thorn remained, but so did the grace.
There are times when we pray faithfully, persistently, and sincerely, and God does not change the circumstance. The relationship does not return. The opportunity does not come. The burden is not removed. The door does not open.
A “no” from God does not mean He has stopped listening. Nor does it mean our prayers have failed.
Sometimes God removes the thorn. Sometimes He gives us grace to live with it.
Persistent prayer teaches us to keep asking until God answers—and then to trust Him enough to receive His answer.
Grace may not remove what hurts, but grace can make us sufficient for what remains.
PRAYER
Lord, there are things I have asked You to change, remove, or restore. Sometimes I do not understand why Your answer is no. Give me the faith to trust Your wisdom when Your answer is different from the one I hoped to receive. When You do not remove the burden, help me discover that Your grace really is sufficient. Teach me to trust not only Your power to change my circumstances, but Your power to sustain me when they do not change. Amen.
JOURNAL PROMPT
What have you asked God to change or remove that has remained? How might your prayer change if, instead of asking only for removal, you also asked God to reveal the grace He is providing in the midst of it?
