Wrestling With God

“I will not let You go unless You bless me!”
— Genesis 32:26 (NKJV)

REFLECTION

Jacob entered the night alone, uncertain about what awaited him in the morning. Esau was approaching with four hundred men, and Jacob could no longer run from his past or control his future.

So Jacob prayed.

But that night prayer became more than words. Jacob wrestled with God. And as the night wore on, his struggle became an act of surrender. He could not overpower God, but neither would he let go.

“I will not let You go unless You bless me.”

There are moments when prayer feels like wrestling. The answer does not come quickly. The burden does not lift. God seems silent, yet something within us refuses to walk away.

Persistent prayer is not wrestling against God. It is wrestling with God—holding on when we do not understand, trusting His character when we cannot trace His hand.

Jacob entered the night trying to secure a blessing. He left the encounter changed.

Sometimes the greatest answer to persistent prayer is not simply that God changes our circumstances.

He changes us.

PRAYER

Lord, there are times when I do not understand what You are doing, and there are answers for which I am still waiting. Teach me not to let go simply because the night is long. Give me faith to hold on to You when I cannot see what You are doing. And as I wrestle in prayer, do not merely change my circumstances—change me. May I leave every encounter with You knowing You more deeply and trusting You more fully. Amen.

JOURNAL PROMPT

What are you wrestling with God about right now? What would it mean for you to keep holding on to Him—even if the answer does not come the way or when you expect?
