When You Don’t Know What to Pray

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:26–27 (NKJV)

REFLECTION

There are moments when we come to God and simply do not know what to say. The burden may be real, but the words will not come. We may not understand what we need, what God is doing, or even what we should ask Him to do.

Romans 8 gives us wonderful assurance for those moments. The Holy Spirit does not wait for us to find the perfect words. He “helps in our weaknesses” and intercedes for us according to the will of God.

This means prayer does not depend upon our ability to express ourselves perfectly. God understands the prayer beneath the words—the burden, the longing, the grief, and even the silence.

Sometimes the deepest prayer may simply be, “Lord, You know.”

And He does.

When you do not know what to pray, you can still come. You can sit quietly in His presence and trust the Spirit to carry before God what you cannot put into words.

You do not have to know what to say to be heard by God.

PRAYER

Lord, there are times when I do not know what to pray. I do not have the words to explain what I feel, what I need, or what I hope You will do. Thank You that my silence does not separate me from You. Thank You for the Holy Spirit, who helps me in my weakness and carries before You what I cannot express. Teach me to trust that even when I do not know what to say, You know my heart. Help me simply to remain in Your presence and trust You. Amen

JOURNAL PROMPT

What burden are you carrying today that you cannot quite put into words? Spend a few quiet moments with God without trying to explain it. What would it mean to trust that the Spirit understands what you cannot say?
