Listen

“Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

— 1 Samuel 3:10 (KJV)

REFLECTION

Prayer is often described as talking with God. But conversation requires more than speaking. It also requires listening.

Samuel heard his name but did not immediately recognize the voice of God. He had to learn to listen. Finally, Eli told him how to respond: “Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

There are times when persistent prayer means asking again. There are also times when persistence means becoming quiet enough to hear what God may be saying.

We can become so focused on the answer we want that we miss the voice of the One to whom we are praying.

Prayer is not only bringing our heart to God. It is making room for God to speak to our heart.

PRAYER

Lord, I spend so much of my prayer time speaking that I sometimes forget to listen. Quiet my heart before You. Help me recognize Your voice through Your Word and the leading of Your Spirit. Keep me from becoming so focused on the answer I want that I miss what You are trying to say. Give me the heart of Samuel that responds, “Speak; for thy servant heareth.” Teach me not only to speak to You, but to listen for You. Amen.

JOURNAL PROMPT

What might God be trying to say that you have been too busy speaking—or too focused on an answer—to hear? What would it look like today to become quiet and listen?
